Volunteering at the Junior High

Last time you talked about moving to Baltimore County.

Right.  And I started to get involved with the schools.  My older of the two daughters was in junior high — this was before middle schools came along — so I volunteered there.

Junior high kids can be a handful.

Yep.  But I often thought:  If I were to be a teacher, it would be a challenge to teach at that level.  When their minds are exploring.  Seeking new ideas.  Just the right time to try to channel their energies in the right direction.

Good luck with that.

I know.  Well, I didn’t teach.  But I wanted to help.

How?

Through the junior high PTSA.

The S is for students?

Right.  It’s getting them involved.  Decision-making.  Taking responsibility.  Like that.

Anyway, show a little interest and I’m on the Board of Directors.  And before long I’m the Treasurer.

As you probably know, teachers need all the help they can get.  They pay for so much classroom stuff out of their own pockets.

So we put on events to raise funds to help them out.

What kind of events?

Well, nothing out of the ordinary.  Spaghetti suppers.

Hot dogs.

Nothing spectacular.  Just enough so the parents come out to support our efforts.
