From Rackets to Blades, With Hot Chocolate

Any more candy stories?

No, but how about hot chocolate?

Okay.

While I was in elementary school there was an abandoned tennis court a couple of blocks from my home.

And in the winter, when the temperature fell below freezing, someone would spray water on the court.  And layer by layer it would build up to become an ice-skating rink.  I wasn’t much good as a skater, but it was fun.

But the thing I remember most about it was the hot chocolate.

It tasted good on those cold winter days.  And this part I remember too.  They would make yours either with water or milk — your choice

milk water

With water, the price was a nickel.  Make it with milk, and the price was a dime.  Of course it tasted better with milk, but remember we were just kids, so we weren’t that fussy.

Don’t know who did all that, but we appreciated it.

Do they still do that?

No.  I went back many years later.  They had built houses where we used to skate.  I guess they call that progress.  But not for me, who still remembers those hot chocolates.
