The Candy Connection

Last time you said you would talk about something else.

Right.  How about candy?

Candy?

Yeah.  Tell me.  If you were going to open a candy store, where would you put it?

I’m not sure.

How about right across the street from an elementary school?

store

Not a bad idea.

Well, that’s what happened across from my school.  As a teenager, I came to enjoy the more expensive candies.  Like Hershey’s.

And I liked the Mounds bar.  Remember how I said I liked the coconut-covered ice-cream bar?  Well, I came to like the Mounds bar for the same reason.

And remember how I said I helped the young kids get across the street?  Well, guess where they went.  And I went.  To the candy store.  And, as young kids, without much money, we headed for the penny-candy counter.

Norman Rockwell captured it pretty well.  There were so many kinds of penny candy.  I hope I didn’t keep the store owner waiting too long

What could you get for only a penny?

Quite a bit back in those days.  There was a chocolate-covered marshmallow bar I liked.  Don’t know what they’d charge for it now.  But only a penny then.

And there was a strip of paper with colored sugar dots on it.

They were fun to pick off and eat.  Probably ate some paper too, but it was worth it.  Especially for only a penny.

I guess so.
